Hallmarks of the New Theology

A friend sent me this, and I thought it was a very good and succinct summary of the issue of The New Theology. He asked me for comments, and I couldn’t think of any point that wasn’t already covered by these.

{| class=“wikitable” !colspan=“2”|New Theology In A Nutshell

These are all errors! 'These points are not in accord with the Bible.' They are how many unbiblical doctrines have gained foothold in many churches. Adventism calls these “New Theology” because they were not present at the beginning of Adventism, but are errors that have crept into Adventist theology from other churches, and, unfortunately, almost a whole generation of pastors have been taught these errors, and are out teaching them to others. This was predicted, and so was predicted the rise of a final generation to help us restore the correct interpretation of Scripture on these matters, and pave the way for the final return of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

I was not always aware of how invasive these ideas can be. I did not initially recognize them, and at first, I thought talk of “new theology” was strange. But after I learned more about this issue, I was better equipped to recognize the influence of the new theology, and how it differs from our historic Adventist message.

I told my friend… * It might be fun to expand out these points with subbullets to show every manifestation of each of them. Those manifestations are a wolfpack in sheeps clothing, not always recognizeable as to which of these things they come from.

So I decided to create this wiki page. You are welcome to edit any of the following sections and add things you have heard that are manifestations of these points.

The number one rule of wiki editing is to be bold. Go ahead - make changes. Other people can correct any mistakes you make, so have confidence, and give it a try! There are all kinds of editing conventions, rules, and philosophies for the editing of wiki pages, but the be bold rule is the most important of these!

New Theology Error #1: Original sin--every baby is a guilty, condemned sinner at birth

Here are some examples of this error: * Sin is what you are - From a New Theology pastor during his sermon about Moses and the rod turned to a snake

Resources And Further Explanations Of Why New Theology Claim #1 is an Error

Contrary to new theology error #1, sin is what you do, it is not what you are.

* Augustine perceived the flesh and the spirit to be in cosmic tension. Never did he see the triumph of the spirit over the flesh. He did not understand the legalistic failures of this man nor the complete victory when he surrended to the love and power of Jesus Christ Indeed, in extant church literature, Augustine was the first to have proposed the concept that Romans 7:14-24 is describing a saved Christian. The torment of this man stands in striking contrast to the peace and assurance of God's children that is so frequently described in Scripture Augustine's view of original sin created a dilemma when he considered the incarnate Christ. If we were sinners just because we were born, then this would infer that Christ, too, was a sinner, for He, too, was born as we are. Of course, this was an intolerable thought. The Bible plainly described Christ as “that holy thing which was born of thee [Mary]” (Like 1:35). Christ could never be described as sinful. Therefore, Augustine was forced to conclude logically that Christ possessed an altogether different nature from man. Thus, he postulated that Christ possessed the nature of unfallyn man. In this he ignored the plainest evidence of Scripture to the contrary. Since Christ was declared to have the human nature of an unfallen man, this led the Catholic Chruch to espouse the plasphemous doctrine of the Immaculate Conception, which was fully incorporated into church dogma in the nineteenth centure. This doctrine declared that Mary was born of the Holy Ghost so that she could have a son who possessed an unfallen nature. Thus, step by logical step, Augustine's false theology led to the incorporation of numerous unscriptural doctrines receiving acceptance by the Catholic Church. * Some authors have also set forth a dangerous revision of history, in an attempt to align the 1888 message with the new theology concepts of the unfallen nature of Christ and victoriousless living. Such efforts are plainly intellectural dishonesty of the worst sort. No trace of the new theology views is to be found in the 1888 message. Pg. 26, Deceptions of the New Theology - Colin D. New Theology Error #2: Jesus took an unfallen human nature.

Here are some examples of this error: *

Resources and further explanations Of Why New Theology Claim #2 is an Error

Contrary to new theology error #2, Christ showed how with complete dependence on his heavenly Father, (“Not as I will, but as Thy will”), it is possible to live in this body with our nature, and still achieve victory over sin in this life.

* Dennis Priebe - Is it essential or nonessential? http://www.dennispriebe.com/new/node/20 The nature of Christ is one of the most controversial subjects in Adventism. Some have declared that we should cease discussion of the subject because it is not essential to our salvation. This study examines why the nature of Christ deserves our continued study. What difference does it really make to our salvation and to the mission of the church? * For even hereunto were ye called: because Christ also suffered for us, leaving us an example that ye should follow his steps: Who did no sin, neither was guile found in his mouth (1 Peter 2:21, 22) * Either man possesses a fallen nature or an unfallen nature. There can be no composite nature. Again it needs to be emphasized that character is distinct from nature. Christ possessed a fallen human nature, but His character was ever perfect. In this He provided an example to us. That Jesus possessed a fallen anture is seen by His collapse when bearing the cross. Thsi was the response of a nature weakened by 4,000 years of sin. Pg. 109, Deceptions of the New Theology - Colin D. Standish, Russell R. Standish - https://books.google.com/books?id=dIER6mwHlfoC&pg=PA42&lpg=PA42&dq=new+theology+unfallen+nature&source=bl&ots=8rwVzcajEy&sig=ACfU3U3a_tMCop892ybdbiw-q7NaQylwhQ&hl=en&sa=X&ved=2ahUKEwjbuZiizOvgAhXC854KHfFwC1EQ6AEwA3oECFsQAQ#v=onepage&q=new%20theology%20unfallen%20nature&f=false * Jesus Christ is our example in all things. He began life, passed through its experienced, and ended its record, with a sanctified human will. He was tempted in all points like as we are, and yet because He kept his will surrendered and sanctified, He never bent in the slightest degree towards the doing of evil, or towards manifesting rebellion against God (Special Testimonies, Oct 29, 1894) Here, surely is the key. The whole difference between Christ and man was not nature but character. That one understanding of the human nature of Christ enhances our understanding of the gift of Heaven. It helps us to understand what it really meant for God to give His only begotten Son that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life (John 3:16). It helps us to understand how Jesus is able to succor them that are tempted (Hebrews 2:17) and why He is not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance (2 Peter 3:9). We begin to understand how He is able to save to the uttermost all that come untio God by Him (Hebrews 7:25). Pg. 42, Deceptions of the New Theology - Colin D. Standish, Russell R. Sanctification is necessary, but it doesn't save you. == Here are some examples of this error: * Jesus sacrifice was more important than his example of how to live a sinless life - From a New Theology pastor during his sermon about Moses and the rod turned to a snake * God can 100% justify us, but can only partially sanctify us in this life === Resources and Further Explanations Of Why New Theology Claim #3 is an Error === Contrary to new theology error #3, the same God's grace that saves us by 100% justifying us, that same grace is also 100% powerful to 100% sanctify us. It is the same God's grace in either case, the same God's grace that created the universe. == New Theology Error #4: Justification is a declaring righteous, not a making righteous. == Here are some examples of this error: * === Resources and Further explanations Of Why New Theology Claim #4 is an Error === Contrary to new theology error #4, it justification actually makes us righteous. == New Theology Error #5: Sinful behavior cannot be fully expelled from the Christian's life here on earth, even through the power of the Spirit. == Here are some examples of this point: * We can never achieve perfection in this life * God can 100% justify us, but can only partially sanctify us in this life === Resources and further explanations Of Why New Theology Claim #5 is an Error === Contrary to new theology error #5, it is indeed possible to expel sinful behavior from the Christian's life here on earth by relying on the power of the Spirit. * We need not retain one sinful propensity (Bible Commentary, Vol 7, Pg. 943) * Some authors have also set forth a dangerous revision of history, in an attempt to align the 1888 message with the new theology concepts of the unfallen nature of Christ and victoriousless living. * It is important to delineate that which biblical perfection is not: 1. Perfection is not holy flesh. Our sinful, fallen nature will not be changed until this mortal puts on immortality and this corruptible puts on incorruption at the return of Jesus Christ. This change is termed glorification. But, through the power of Jesus, God's children will gain victory over every temptation of Satan, not through human power but through the power of the divine. 2. Perfection in no wise ensures immunity from future sin. Victory today is no guarantee of victory for tomorrow. Indeed, we are to become converted daily, so that we may possess the power of the indwelling Christ. It is possible to fall, as all of us can sadly testify. But how wonderful it is for us to know that if we sin we have an Advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous (1 John 2:1). Nevertheless, the same text of Scripture calls to God's children to cease from sin. Pg. 109, Deceptions of the New Theology - Colin D. Standish, Russell R.
